Legal System
The legal system in Cyprus follows the English Legal structure and consequently all statutes relating to business matters and procedures are very similar to those of the English system. Most laws have been officially translated into English allowing foreign entrepreneurs to easily come to terms with the Cyprus legal system.

Acquisition of the Cypriot Citizenship by Registration or Naturalization
Registrations of minors (under the age of 18)
(a) Applications for registration of minors who were born abroad after 16/8/1960 and either their father is a Cypriot citizen or, after 11/6/1999, their mother is a Cypriot citizen, are submitted on form M.121. A birth certificate of the child, identity card, passports and certificate of marriage of the parents are attached.
(b) Applications for the registration of minors who were born either in Cyprus or abroad before 11/6/1999 and their mother is a Cypriot citizen or their father acquired the Cypriot citizenship after their birth are submitted on form M.126 by the parent who is a Cypriot citizen. Two photographs and a birth certificate of the minor, photocopies of the passports of the parents and consent of the parent who is not a Cypriot citizen are attached.
Registration of adults (over the age of 18)
(a) Persons of Cypriot origin who were born before 16/8/1960 submit an application on form M. 71 or 72 and attach their birth certificate and their fathers or grand fathers particulars i.e. passport/identity card/certificate of citizenship.
(b) Persons of Cypriot origin, regardless of the place of their residence, who were born after 16/8/1960 submit applications on form M.123 (in duplicate) and attach their birth certificate.
(c) Persons of Cypriot origin, born either before or after 16/8/1960, who are British citizens or citizens of any commonwealth country who are legally residing in the Republic of Cyprus for a period of one year they may apply on form M.124 (in duplicate) and attach their birth certificate, a good character certificate issued by the police and photocopy of their passport. Registrations as a result of marriage to citizens of the Republic of Cyprus A person of full age and capacity who has contracted a marriage to a citizen of Cyprus may submit an application on form M.125 (in duplicate) after completing 3 years of marriage and harmonious cohabitation with the Cypriot spouse.
Provided that the above mentioned provisions shall not apply where the alien entered or stays illegally in Cyprus. A marriage certificate, a certificate of cohabitation of the two spouses, a birth certificate of the applicant, good character certificate issued by police and particulars of the Cypriot spouse are attached.
Acquisition of Cypriot Citizenship by Naturalisation
An application on form M.127 may be submitted by persons of full age and capacity who were legally residing in the Republic of Cyprus and who in the last 8 years before their application accumulated more than 5 years of residence or more than 7 years of residence, if they are sports players, sports technicians or coaches or work in International Business Companies, or for Cypriot employers etc. They should attach a birth certificate, their passport, a good character certificate issued by the police, 2 photographs and the publication in a Cypriot newspaper for 2 consecutive days of their intention to apply for naturalization.
Renunciation of Cypriot Citizenship
Applications for renunciation of Cypriot Citizenship are submitted on form M.130
(in Duplicate) and a certificate or affirmation that the applicants are holders of any foreign nationality is attached.
Applications for registration of death
Applications for the registration of death of a citizen of Cyprus who died abroad are submitted on form M.138 by the next of kin of the deceased and a death certificate from the country where the death occurred is attached.
Note: All the above applications are signed before a Judge or a Court Registrar, if they are submitted from Cyprus or before a Consular Officer of the Republic of Cyprus, if they are submitted from abroad.
